On Sunday May 13, RCFM is excited to be presenting a special bonus mini market at River Market from 11-3. With focus on sweets, crafts, and other delectable goodies, consider bringing Mom down to the market to browse and wander after brunch. There are a number of restaurants in the area serving up special meals for mom and what better way to digest than to wander lazily in the beautiful setting of River Market?

It’s the only market until we return June 7 for our regular weekly summer spot at Tipperary Park on Thursdays, so don’t miss it!

Tickets for the fundraiser will also be on sale.

Sweet on Mom takes place May 13 from 11-3 and will feature a kids’ craft area as well. River Market is located at 810 Quayside Drive in New Westminster.

This Saturday marks our final winter market for this season. After this market, we’ll be taking a short hiatus to get organized for the summer (but you can see our info booth at the Naramata at the River wine event April 24) and we’ll be returning to Tipperary Park on Thursdays from 3-7 from June 7 to October 4.

But! Winter market season is not over yet despite the return of spring and daylight savings and this market will be our most packed yet this season! We hope you can join us.

You can pick up your tickets for the Naramata Bench Spring Wine Release event on April 24 at the market on Saturday – they’ll be upstairs just outside the circus school. Kids crafts are generously sponsored by Yoyomama.ca and you can find them upstairs, too. The BC Hydro PowerSmart team will also be on hand with activities and information. Outside on the west end, find the local Brownie pack with information about Girl Guides of Canada. We are pleased to have Karla Sleightholme, a talented local saxaphone player, performing live throughout the market. Local environmental group, New Westminster Environmental Partners will also be there to provide info and gather your input on the Master Transportation Plan in New Westminster.

You can reach the market on foot via McInnes Street, Begbie Street or via the overhead walkway from Hyack Square at the foot of 8th Street. There is a bike rack on the south west end of the market. Free parking is available courtesy of the City of New Westminster on the B deck of the downtown waterfront parkade. You can enter it via 6th or 4th Streets. Park on the B deck, at the southwest end and use the stairs to access Quayside Drive. And pay parking is available to the west and east of River Market for $1.50 for 2 hours.

The market takes place inside (both upstairs and downstairs) and outside (on the patio and on the west end). There are lots of yummy hot food choices as well as amazing handmade crafts, prepared delicacies, and produce – yes! Produce. Here’s what’s in season right now.

Here are the vendors confirmed.

There are only two winter markets left this season and March 3 is coming up fast! This month we are celebrating new beginnings because spring is in the air, and our friend the groundhog has predicted it will be here soon! (well, I guess that depends which groundhog you listen to). No matter, our farmer friends are already busy in preparation of a long growing season and many are starting the work in cold frames and greenhouses.

macarons - delicious!

We here at the market have started the work for summer, including seeking new vendors and also seeking a new Operations Manager. Check out the links if you’re interested.

But that doesn’t mean we aren’t excited for the last two winter markets! We are pleased this month to have Pretty Up Parties returning as our kids activity sponsor in front of the circus school, and Melissa has a really fun craft planned. We will also have balloon artist Kemal upstairs for your entertainment, and our musical guest this month is Karla Sleightholme, a jazz sax player. We are also happy to be supporting the community group this month. Lunchgroup Heavy Industries, a fun team fundraising and riding in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer (and their team captain happens to be a former board member). The community group area is located upstairs near the escalator.

Don’t forget to check out the vendors outdoors – both on the patio on the riverside and on the west end of the market. We’ve got a few new ones this month we think you’ll really like.

You can enter it via McKenzie, 6th, or 4th Streets.

I get asked often who writes these weekly blurbs. I do! I’m Jen, and I am the Operations Manager for RCFM. The Royal City Farmers Market started in 2008 and the summer season has always stretched into the early part of fall, until the Thursday before Thanksgiving. I think it’s a good time to end our summer season, on a note of reaping what you sow, harvesting your hard work, and of giving thanks. This year is no exception. So this week, as our final market takes place, I’d like to give thanks.

Thank you to the shoppers for coming faithfully, in both beautiful sunshine and drenching rain. Thank you to the vendors who have worked so hard to contribute to our fun and family friendly atmosphere. Thank you to the board of directors for your hard work and dedication. Thank you to the donors and sponsors for our season: the City of New Westminster, Westminster Savings Credit Union, The Heritage Grill, Derrick Thornhill at Park Georgia Realty, Tenth to the Fraser.ca, Hudsonny Design, And last but most certainly not least, thank you to the volunteers for making my job easier, for showing up with smiles on your faces and working hard to make our market one of the most friendly, community oriented markets I have ever been to. To all of you, a hat tip.

And since we’re doing hat tips, we’re going to send this season off with a fun day, and October 6th will be Silly Hat Day! Wear a silly hat and get a coupon good for $1 off at our first winter market, November 5th.

We also hope you’ll be coming back for the final week of the Stamp Card contest. Pop by the info table with your stamp card for week three’s stamp! After you collect all three stamps, add your name and number to the back, and drop it into the draw box. One lucky winner will win a prize package with $25 worth of gift certificates to be spent at the winter market, as well as an RCFM ceramic double walled mug, a set of three of our amazing new produce bags, and a t-shirt (from our existing inventory) AND a free 2012 membership to our organization.

Bonus draw! This last week, answer the question: What is the best thing about this 2011 summer farmers market season? and drop it in the draw box. One lucky winner will also be selected to win the same awesome prize package: $25 in gift certificates, the shirt, the mug, the produce bags, and the 2012 membership.

You may only win one draw, so we’ll pull the winner for the Stamped Card draw first, and if we pull the same name from the Best Thing draw, we’ll put it aside and pull another name.

One final contest that will be ending soon is the Photo Contest! We’ll be drawing it on October 8th, so get your photos in!

Music this week is Fiddlestix. Our music at the market is sponsored by the great people at the Heritage Grill. Be sure to check out the kids area with hat-making crafts sponsored by local realtor Derrick Thornhill and Pretty Up Parties. Weather permitting, we will also have a Teddy Bear Picnic hosted by Mary Forstbauer of Forstbauer Farms.

You can reach the market via transit by taking the 106 bus or the Skytrain to Columbia Street Station and walking to the market at 4th and Royal. Parking is available in the neighbourhood for free along Royal Avenue, Queens Avenue, or at City Hall’s lot after 4:30. Please respect our neighbours. Cyclists can drop bikes off to the fine folks at our info desk at the top end of the market for safekeeping. Don’t forget to check out our cool new merchandise – we are now selling reusable produce bags made locally by the people at Carebags.

Rain, rain go away….. hopefully by Thursday!

According to the forecast, Thursday is predicted as “variable cloudiness” so we are hoping that our second to last market isn’t nearly as wet as it is when I write this! We’ve got some fun stuff happening at the market this week and would much prefer for the drizzle to stay up in the sky.

First, we are pleased to have two community groups with us this week: the New Westminster Community Garden Society will be there, as will be representatives from the New Westminster Community Food Action Committee. They will be filming a short film about food security at the market. This film will not only help educate people about food security issues, but it will also be used with an application to the CRTC for New Westminster’s own community television station. Chat with the New Westminster Community Food Action Committee members at the market to learn more.

We also hope you’ll be coming back for week two of the Stamp Card contest. Pop by the info table with your stamp card for week two’s stamp!

Bonus draw! Additionally, over the remaining two weeks, answer the question: What is the best thing about this 2011 summer farmers market season? and drop it in the draw box.

Music this week is Jeff Huggins. Our music at the market is sponsored by the great people at the Heritage Grill. Be sure to check out the kids area with crafts sponsored by local realtor Derrick Thornhill, and stop by to see our facepainter Allyson to get your arm or face painted.

Well, the countdown is on as we wind down our summer season with only three markets left. We’re starting the planning process for our winter market, and are now accepting applications from vendors, and so this week we’re offering part one of a fun little contest that could see you walking away with a prize pack valued at almost $75!

Here’s how to play along: come to the market each week for the next three weeks. Pop by the info table and pick up a stamp card. We’ll stamp a different stamp each week.

Bonus draw! Additionally, over this next three weeks, answer the question: What is the best thing about this 2011 summer farmers market season? and drop it in the draw box.

Our musical guest this week is courtesy of Redrick Sultan, a four piece funk jazz band. Our music at the market is sponsored by the great people at the Heritage Grill. Be sure to check out the kids area with crafts sponsored by local realtor Derrick Thornhill, and stop by to see our facepainter Allyson to get your arm or face painted. Stop by to see what the folks from the New Westminster Hyack Festival Association are working on. And don’t forget about the cookbook swap! Look for it up at the info table and feel free to bring your unwanted cookbooks to swap for cookbooks from our stash. It’s a book for a book of approximate equal value, or you can buy a book for a minimum $2 donation.
